Monumental - a arte delas, 2018
Rio de Janeiro
In 2013, the exhibition “Elles: Women Artists from the Collection of the Centre Georges Pompidou” that the museum curators and I organized at the CCBB in Rio de Janeiro and Belo Horizonte, was a strategy to “misalign gender”, to dismantle prejudice against “female art” and show through the multiplication of points of view and techniques, that women artists made 20th century art history as much as men. Abstract, functional, objective, realistic, conceptual, minimalist, informal, political... Brazilian artists were pioneers and active since the early days. Always contemporary, no art revolution was unfamiliar to them: they were first-rate photographers and video-makers, made performances and pioneered the digital age. Brazil has always been a very “avant-garde” country with a unique presence of female artists in the world.
In the third edition of Monumental, arte na Marina da Glória I tried to bring together women from various fields: radical (at that time there was a sensational exhibition at the Pinacoteca of São Paulo), from the world of graffiti, with concerns about the environment, Afro-Brazilians...
This exhibition is just the tip of the iceberg of their art talents. Thus, it is with great pride that we presented “Monumental – a arte delas”. An exhibition that demanded an effort worthy of its name, in a year of crisis such as 2018, and which became a reality thanks in large part to female resilience: the artists, Gabriela Lobato from BR Marinas, in addition to the galleries - our partners, who together and with a lot of energy and generosity made this exhibition possible. A celebration of art made by women!
